The Myth, Audited Medallion is no longer outrunning the curve There is a number that quietly broke in 2024, and almost nobody in finance media named it for what it was. Medallion — the Renaissance Technologies internal fund that has been the canonical proof against efficient markets for three decades — returned 30% gross on the year. Excellent. Extraordinary by any normal measure. And, for the first time, sitting on the same shelf as the firm's own external products: RIEF returned 22.7%, RIDA 15.6%. Read that gap again. It is not what Medallion has historically been. Between 1988 and 2018 Medallion compounded at roughly 66% gross and 39% net while RIEF — running essentially equity long/short on overflow signals that Medallion would not touch — managed mid-teens at best, with a 17 to 19 percentage point chasm between them.
